Time to look for a job
Posted by Jane from Chicago, IL, US on March 17, 2009

My daughter is a senior in mechanical engineering. Should I counsel her to look for a job now, or to get a graduate degree? And if a graduate degree, in engineering or an MBA?

This is not a great time to be looking for a job. If a graduate degree is an option, that is probably her path of choice. If she plans to pursue engineering in academia, then she should go for the engineering graduate degree, and continue to a PhD. If she wants to get into the working world, an MBA will make her more attractive as an employee -- and will better equip her for the possibility of consulting.

LinkedIn and other social networks
Posted by James from San Diego, CA, US on March 16, 2009

How do I best use LinkedIn and other social networking tools to improve my chances of finding a good job?

First of all, sign up for LinkedIn; craft your profile thoughtfully. Then visit "100+ Smart Ways to Use LinkedIn". It is full of good, non-biased advice. And most of the tips apply equally to other networking sites.

Self-employment
Posted by Henry from Buffalo, NY, US on March 15, 2009

The economic situation has triggered thoughts of self-employment. How do I begin to evaluate my options?

1. Talk to self-employed acquaintances and get their thoughts and opinions.

2. Internet marketing can be a low-cost option for self-employment. But there are many, many ways to go. Good conservative info
is not always easy to find; there are so many sales pages. But explore Google Answers, Yahoo! Answers, and other generic
sites.

3. Consider consulting; talk to consultants to explore.

4. Forums on LinkedIn, BizNik, and elsewhere are great places to get ideas.
